The project entailed the construction of a facility of 5,000m² in the IDA Business & Technology Park in Athlone. The provision of adequate accommodation, to house the Mechanical & Electrical Plant required, was vital to the client and surface water attenuation was a prerequisite of the Local Authority. The requirement to monitor and control temperature, air quality and humidity was of paramount importance to the client.

The ISO Class 8 clean rooms were formed from insulated composite units which were also used to create a “walk-on” ceiling thus providing secure access to mechanical and electrical equipment and facilitate the changing of filters etc. to ensure that the services were fully operational 24/7.

The mechanical & electrical installations were designed and installed to enable the clean rooms to operate independently of each other in terms of the air quality and humidity etc. that would be required for any particular process.

Two separate gowning and sanitation areas were constructed as cleansing facilities and cross-over benches to the clean side. The flooring consisted of vinyl sheet membrane with welded joints and coved skirting for ease of cleaning.

The complexity here was the connection to an adjoining occupied building and the provision of new electricity supply to serve both new and existing. The adjoining existing building was in full production therefore noise and deliveries were an issue to be controlled.

A new ESB substation was construction and close liaison with the ESB was critical to ensure that power was not interrupted to the adjacent building during production hours.
